Although crash cymbals aren't considered one of the three core parts of a drum set they have a role that can truly make or break the music when playing. That being said, crash cymbals are certainly a standard part of a drum set. The loud crash and accentuation that crash cymbals are able to create gives them the ability to build the climax and land on it in a way that no other cymbal can and especially no other instrument. Crash cymbals are a huge part of the ability for a drummer to make key hits during a song and drive the feel and groove of a band.

Some drummers even prefer to use more than one crash cymbal because it creates more capacity for volume and they can achieve two completely different crash tones and sounds.

A typical crash cymbal ranges between the sizes of 14" to 18". However, crash cymbals with sizes outside of that range can also be found some in the industry. A thinner crash is well suited for rock, jazz, blues, and other potentially light styles of music whereas heavier crashes can be found being used for hard rock, metal, and other heavy styles of music.

The placement for crash cymbals is typically on the left side because they are not as often used as its ride cymbal and hi-hat brothers. Looking for a way to spice up your drum solo? Get a good crash cymbal and in no time you will be able to accentuate various hits and parts of your drum solo and a give you an entirely different character to enter into during your solo.
