This Suhr Modern Custom is actually the first Suhr brand two humbucking, no single coil, guitar I have played. Immediately I was reminded how much I enjoy the middle position on a two humbucker guitar. The combination of the neck and bridge humbuckers gives that terrific and balanced sound that classic dual humbucking guitars have been creating since the late 50’s. However, leave it to Suhr to put a unique twist on a typical guitar design. The incorporation of a 5-way pickup selector and what I (and others) call a “blower switch”, makes the guitar just that much more capable of achieving almost any sound. I like to set a clean neck pickup sound with some volume and tone rolled back to play rhythm and bring out the full-bodied nature of this guitar. Then, when it needs unleashed, click the “blower switch” and unleash the bridge SSH+ in all of its tenacity. Like most Suhr Modern’s you cannot forget about the jazz/blues capabilities of an SSV in the neck. This guitar can effortlessly handle any gig that mixes rock, jazz, blues, and other styles. The Mahogany neck and Ebony fretboard on this Suhr Modern Custom allow the player to not be hindered when playing with speed and dexterity. Often times when playing a more vintage style guitar I find I have to somewhat prepare myself to play a fast lick due to a thicker neck, overly glossy finish, or other reasons. However, with this Modern Custom none of these issues crossed my mind and I found that effortlessly I was able to float over the neck, to the best of my abilities.
