First things first, it is a known fact that Suhr’s finishes are consistently unique in their beauty, and this Modern Custom is no exception. The Waterfall Burl Maple top has an incredibly specific grain that never fails to make customers in the store turn heads towards it. However, myself, like every musician, is primarily concerned with the sound quality and reliability of the axe. I attempted to demonstrate in this video the responsiveness to touch that this guitar contains. The SSV is consistently one of the most responsive neck humbuckers made in the industry today. It is fat and warm sounding but maintains the presence and top-end necessary to have clear cleans. Initially, in any kind of an HSH pickup configuration one begins to question how the single coil will be balanced with the humbuckers, specifically the SSH+ and the SSV (both having the capabilities of high output, especially the SSH+). The ML single coil has the output necessary to be balanced with the SSV and SSH+ all while maintaining the clarity that we seek in a quality single coil pickup. Thus, we have a tonally diverse guitar combined with a lush finish. The Black Limba body wood unsurprisingly has a sound all to its own. The character of this guitar to my ears is slightly brighter and not quite as dark sounding as most in the Modern line, especially those with mahogany, a darker sounding wood in general. Immediately when playing this axe I noticed the Black Limba body to my ears makes it sound closer to a Suhr Standard model than any other modern I have played. This gives the Modern Custom Carve Top Waterfall Burl Maple its own tonal category in all of the Suhr line.
