Let's admit, at this point you've arrived to one of your absolute favorite categories. Overdrive pedals are one of the most enjoyable and fun aspects of guitar effects. They have an incredible way of providing a whole different character to an amp and guitar and can enhance what a quality amp and quality guitar do like nothing else. There are a wide variety of types of overdrive pedals ranging from boost, mild overdrive, mid-boost, clean boost, and all the way to thick and rockin' overdrive. Every overdrive pedal is different from others in terms of the sound produced, its function, the pedal's effects, and price as well. There are a few factors of overdrive pedals that are essential to cover before you being looking into playing or purchasing one.

Capabilities: Overdrives are made with a variety of different capabilities. For example, boost pedals are mainly meant to simply boost the signal of your guitar in terms of volume. A boost pedal (typically synonymous with "clean boost") might add a very subtle amount of overdrive but is mainly meant to enhance the natural sound of the guitar and open up an amplifier. A mild overdrive, such as a tube screamer, is a notch above a boost pedal. It will maintain lots of the boost qualities but will also transcend into actual overdrive territory but is not meant to be a thick and sustaining gain sound. Some overdrives come in the form of a "mid-boost". A mid boost is basically a fat, mid-range based overdrive that will add a significant mid-range punch to the guitar's sound as well as a good amount of overdrive. Many overdrives could be considered overdrive/distortion pedals. They will carry many of the qualities of boosts and have lots of capacity for mild overdrive but can then breach into the realms of distortion in the thick lead sound and sustenance that is available.

Features: Overdrive pedals come with a variety of different features. Many are based on just a couple of knobs such as level, gain, and maybe a tone or 2 or 3-band eq. However, many are now being made with additional options for boosts and tone cuts that will add a different dimension to the character of the overdrive that is already produced. Some pedals are two-in-one based pedals that allow you to obtain a certain overdrive sound on one side and a completely different overdrive sound on the other. In addition to two different sounds many of these with two sides are able to be stacked on top of each other to combine for a super thick overdrive sound.

You cannot go wrong with brands like Boss, JHS, Wampler, Fulltone, Electro-Harmonix, Friedman, Ibanez, Rockett, Catalinbread, DOD, and others. Each of these companies not only has great sounding and versatile overdrive pedals, but are built to withstand the wear and tear of being a musician.
