What are power amps specifically?
In a nutshell, power amps take a signal that is too weak to be amplified and strengthen it to where it can move speaker cones, power other components and parts, and generate volume of sound. For example, the signal that comes from a mixer does not have the ability to move the speakers in a speaker cabinet or passive speaker. This is much like preamp tubes in a guitar amp would not be enough without a power amp section to move the speaker of the amp, therefore, you wouldn’t be able to play a guitar amp without the power amp section. One of the areas of variance between different power amps is the quality, cleanliness, and size of the signal that is created. A good power amp will create a pure and very clean signal with no distortion. One’s that are cheaper and less quality will distort sooner and possibly not generate as clean of a signal.

Common uses of power amps…
One of the more common uses of a power amp that you will find as a musician is being used by a soundman or anybody running sound for a band. Most mixers, outside of those for a portable PA system, are passive mixers so they do not generate that powerful signal that can move the speaker cones in your PA speakers. Many sound engineers will run their mixer into a power amp allowing them to power their passive speakers.

Another use you’ll find for power amps is in guitar rigs. Pedal enthusiasts or those who like processing systems might opt to run those into a power amp and then into their favorite speaker cabinet and have no need for tube or guitar amp confusion.
