There are many different lengths and styles of instrument cables. If you aren’t sure what type of cable to go with just contact one of our sales reps here at N Stuff Music by phone, email, website chat, or visit us at our store.

Let’s discuss a few of the different type of cables and what they are used for.

Instrument Cable: An instrument cable is just a generic ¼” to ¼” cable that can be used on any guitar, bass, keyboard, or practically any instrument that is being plugged into an amplifier or speaker system of some sort. Instrument cables are vastly different in size and there are a few important things to keep in mind. The longer a cable is, the more susceptible it will be to pick up access noise along the signal chain.

However, you also want to be sure that your instrument cable is of adequate length for you to perform comfortably and with the right amount of slack necessary. 5’ cables are great for practice when sitting closely to your amp and will not require you to have to deal with an excess of cable, but do not quite have the length necessary to perform on stage. 10’ cables are great for practice and gigs that may not require you to move much. You can be sure that with a smaller cable there is little to no excess noise entering into your signal chain as long as the cable is of good quality.

Patch Cable: Patch cables are the very small ¼” connectors that you see linking stompboxes together on a pedalboard. They are meant to do exactly that, link your pedals on your board together. These are very useful because of the minimal size they have which allows you to keep your pedalboard neat and without an excessive amount of cable. However, it is also very important to be sure that your patch cables are of good quality because that will ensure a good signal is entering your pedals so that they can perform at their best. Right angle patch cables will also be the most convenient in wiring your pedals neatly to one another and allowing them to stack closely.
