Tube-driven bass amps have proven throughout time to be a favorite type of bass amp for many bassists. Whether it is Geddy Lee, Cliff Burton, or any other tube bass amp player they have proven to create some of the most sought after bass tones ever created. Although tube bass amps are not nearly as common as tube guitar amps, they are a prominent type of bass amp on the market. Our selection of vacuum tubes here at N Stuff Music will surely have the tubes that you desire for your bass or guitar amp to properly amplify your instrument and get the best possible sound.

First let’s discuss some of the different types of tubes that you will see.

Preamp Tubes: Preamp tubes can be found functioning in the preamp circuit of an amp. These are where your tone stacks, EQ, effects, and other parts of the amp are powered at. The most common type of preamp tube that you will see is a 12ax7 preamp tube. 12ax7 preamp tubes are the industry standard for powering a preamp.

Power amp or Output Tubes: These tubes are what actually generate the sound and volume of your instrument. Power amp tubes are typically in EL84, EL34, 6V6, or 6L6 varieties, but there is also some variation. While Preamp tube distortion is certainly rich and authentic tube distortion, many say the Output tubes are what truly bring out the best of a tube amp when they are pushed past their limit.

Tubes are sought after for a few big reasons. One is that they have a certain feel and sponginess to them that enhances your touch when playing and seems to be difficult to recreate digitally. Another example, as Alexander Dumble laid out, is that the more fragile harmonics can survive where they can move freely in a free space vacuum tube as opposed to being squashed in a transistor amp.

It is very important to only replace the tubes in a tube amplifier if you already have experience in doing so. Many amps need biased after receiving a tube change and it is also essential that you know what types of tubes are going to be compatible with you amplifier.

If you are unsure of how to do some of the maintenance necessary to your tube amp just bring your amp into N Stuff Music is one of our electronics employees and amp experts will be sure to get in back in the perfect shape necessary to gig and function perfectly.
