What exactly is a Direct Box? A direct box will take an unbalanced signal and convert it into a balanced signal. In other words, a direct box will take the unbalanced signal from the cable of your guitar or bass and convert it into a balanced signal and send out of the direct box through a balanced cable. By being converted to a balanced signal the signal will be much less susceptible to excess noise and will avoid being too strong or too weak of a signal. Running a direct box is certainly a great idea when performing on stage if you need to reduce noise or if you need to use a cable of extended length you can run a balanced XLR out of the direct box in which can be as long as needed.

Some direct boxes contain other capabilities as well that will help increase your guitar tone and maintain its purity. Fishman has become a leading innovator in the world of acoustic guitar electronics and pedals. Check out their various acoustic guitar preamp/DI pedals that contain EQ’s, compressors, feedback resistance, in addition to being a DI for your guitar.

For a convenient and easy-to-use direct box check out the ART DualZDirect Dual Professional Passive Direct Box; it is a barebones direct box which will effectively take your guitar, amp, or speaker signal and send a pure direct signal out the other end.

Direct boxes are an essential to effectively gaining a pure guitar or bass signal. By using a direct box you will be able to ensure the sound of your instrument and that it will not be effected by the noise typically associated with very long instrument cables.
