Semi-Hollowbody electric guitars have a sound totally unto themselves that have made them a force to be reckoned with in the realm of versatility. The Semi-Hollowbody electric guitar is a rather simple concept; it is the combination of hollow qualities of a hollowbody guitar but with the body style of a solid body instrument, or it is simply a thin design of a hollowbody instrument often with higher output pickups and more feedback resistance. This creates a totally unique take on classic solid body instrument designs by incorporating elements of the hollowbody design. Guitarists from Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, BB King, and John Scofield, to Dave Grohl, Rich Robinson, and John Frusciante have all used semi-hollowbody guitars through their careers. I don’t think there is anything more you can do to prove the versatility of these instruments than the huge list of players that uses them.

Semi-hollow body instruments have a totally unique sound compared to the solid body versions of similar models. For example, the Fender American Elite Telecaster Thinline is a classic telecaster design and body except with a semi-hollow body and an f-hole on the top of the guitar, much like hollow and semi-hollow body guitars and contrary to the typical solid body telecaster design. These innovative instruments are often found to have a slightly warmer tone due to the semi-hollow body they are made with which serves to channel certain aspects of the warmth found in semi-hollow and hollow guitars.

Players looking for that iconic telecaster shape and style, but would like an even warmer telecaster-style sound would certainly find Fender thinline telecasters as a great potential option.

PRS Guitars have taken full advantage of the semi-hollow body style and warmth in models such as the PRS SE Zach Myers guitar or the PRS SE Custom 22 Semi-Hollow. Duesenberg guitars have become known as some of the most premier innovations of semi-hollow body guitars. Duesenberg has combined their unique body style designs and electronics with the character of hollow-body guitars to create instruments that are unlike any others on the market today.

Many guitarists reach a struggle between the idea of having a guitar that can accomplish both a jazzy clean sound and a punchy blues, rock, and funk sound all within the same guitar. Semi-hollow guitars have been the best solution to this problem. Companies such as Duesenberg, Gretsch, Ibanez, and Rickenbacker have essentially taken a body style that is very similar to the hollow-body guitars and made it much thinner and usually with slightly higher output pickups. This in turn keep lots of what makes a hollow-body guitar sound great for jazz and cleans, but combines it with a thinner body and hotter pickups that give it the capabilities to play punchy blues and rock without fear of feedback and inauthenticity.
